Programme Note
Parts Apart is completely constructed upon Bach’s organ variations over the chorale Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich hier (1747) and upon Stravinsky’s adaptation for choir and instruments of this piece (1956).
Bach’s strict, binding polyphonic construction has been taken apart by Stravinsky and in this case almost shattered, but put “incorrectly” back together again into a fragile, ruleless “cubist” pattern. The original polyphonic lines have been composed between the “joints”.
This is not “music about (or on) music”, but music in music.
