Programme Note

Whether or not it is true that Richard Strauss once described his opera 'Salome' as 'a scherzo with a deadly end', the thought of such a scherzo has never ceased to fascinate me. This piece concerns a scherzo - or rather scherzi inside scherzi, like a Chinese box of the same melodies in many different tempi. These fatally collide with bells, a palpable death symbol.
