Trio 1 (1980)
- Novello & Co Ltd (World)
Commissioned by Lontano
Programme Note
Trio was written in Autumn 1980. Its starting point was some of the sacred dance which I saw in Durham at the 1979 Oriental Festival.
It lasts about 11 minutes, and is scored for flute doubling piccolo, 'cello and one percussionist. In writing it I enjoyed playing with aspects of refrain structure different from those I had explored before. The refrains in Trio work in and out of phase with one another: there is a floating Eb above Middle C which acts as both a taking-off point and a centre of repose; there are dances for tom-tom and for piccolo; all these are expanding gestures from which the melodies and textures of the piece grow; then there is a refrain of bell sounds (gongs/cymbals) which acts as punctuation.
Trio was written for LONTANO at the invitation of Odaline de la Martinez.
