Programme Note

This, the first in a series of sonatinas for solo wind instruments, was written in January 1990 at the invitation of the American clarinettist Philip Rehfeldt for a collection of unaccompanied clarinet works he gathered together to celebrate the 54th birthday of the American composer Barney Childs, to whom the piece is dedicated.

The title merely indicates that the piece was written in January, and it has three sections, played without a break: a slow, predominantly lyrical opening part, an intermediate bridge passage alternating very quiet and fast-flowing melismas with stuttering figures, and a more rhythmical, dance-like final section. Thus, one hopes, the academic disciplines of sonatina-form are to some extent satisfied, and the clarinettist is given, in a short space of time, a variety of musical and technical problems to work out.
