Programme Note

In the compact Second Violin Sonata, the violin's wistful opening tune dominates the whole work, appearing in a variety of guises and giving the work its natural, improvisatory feel. In the outer sections the violin takes charge, the piano taking an accompanying role, although these roles are reversed in the fast central section, with its energised rhythms and dissonant pressure points. The Sonata is in one continuous movement.
