Programme Note
Written in 1944 during one of the most creative periods of his career, this anthem was, remarkably, Berkeley’s first contribution to the English Choral Tradition with which he is now so closely associated. The inspired intensity of the 17th century poet Crashaw’s words clearly had a seep effect on Berkeley. Opportunities abound for a cappella writing, chromatic melismas and homophonic passages using the complete range of the voices. The form consists of two parts, the second beginning with the opening choral phrase of the work. The anthem is suitably concluded by reference to its opening, a portentous organ solo.
