Miniature Variations On A Theme For Orchestra By E. Lutyens (1980)
- Chester Music Ltd (World)
Programme Note
Miniature variations on a theme of E.L.
This piece was requested by the composer-pianist, Michael Finnissy, for a recital on 6 March 1981 in honour of Elizabeth Lutyens’ 75th birthday given at the British Music Information Centre.
It uses a theme from Lutyens’ ‘The Valley of Hatsu se’, a work I much admire which also happens to have been written for and first by my wife, Jane Manning. There are five variations which are introduced, linked and finally invaded by a chorale which presents a certain well known tune in heavy disguise.
