...a haunting work of considerable sensitivity...
Robert Matthew-Walker, Musical Opinion,01/05/2006
Already at 33, with five operas, two symphonies and half a dozen film scores under his belt, the young Bennett had turned to an even younger poet: little Marjory Fleming, who died aged 8 in Kirkcaldy in 1803. Her disarmingly naïve verse found a soulmate in Bennett: a droll yet serious ditty about dead turkeys, a sonnet to a monkey – they all found a ready response in Bennett’s clear melodic contours and mischievously unpredictable piano writing. The soprano Sophie Daneman and pianist Iain Burnside enjoyed themselves.
Hilary Finch, The Times,30/03/2006
