My House, I Say was commissioned to celebrate the opening of the National Opera Center. It's part of 'The OPERA America Songbook' and is available for sale via the OPERA America website
My house, I say is a setting of a Robert Louis Stevenson poem of the same name taken from his 1913 collection, "A Child’s Garden of Verses and Underwoods". It's a song about the individual perceptions of a single shared space, which is represented by an "anchor" motif in E-flat, heard three times.
The song was commissioned by OPERA America as one of the songs in the OPERA America Songbook, which was put together in celebration of the opening of the National Opera Center in New York in September 2012.
OPERA America is the national service organisation for opera in North America.
My house, I say. But hark to the sunny doves That make my roof the arena of their loves, That gyre about the gable all day long And fill the chimneys with their murmurous song:
Our house, they say; and mine, the cat declares And spreads his golden fleece upon the chairs; And mine the dog, and rises stiff with wrath If any alien foot profane the path.
So, too, the buck that trimmed my terraces, Our whilom gardener, called the garden his; Who now, deposed, surveys my plain abode And his late kingdom, only from the road.
