Programme Note

Rhapsody i D was composed in 1952, but never premiered. Some of my early, forgotten pieces did have a second life (for example parts of a string suite, a string quartet, a choral piece). When I was asked to have the early Rhapsody performed after almost 50 years I accepted, although a little worried if the balance between its special "tone", the small signs of the later minimalism (repeated rhythmic patterns) and the clear inspirations from Stravinsky and Bartok.

Time will show. But the initiative of the dedicated pianist Amalie Malling has made it possible to hear the new kind of a polyphonic play between soloist and orchestra that the piece also present. - As well as the naive, dream lyricism that a composer always is a little afraid of in his early works..
