Programme Note
The work was composed for the opening of the Finnish summer festival Avanti in 1999. Unlike normal, rousing fanfares this music should be understood more as a good war-horse’s reminiscences about its victories and perhaps especially its many defeats - i.e. a nervous, indecisive series of shifting moods.
