Programme Note

i. The Rio Grande (Capstan Chanty)
ii. Theodore (or 'The Pirate King')
iii. A Long Time Ago (Halliards Chanty)

All three songs are sea-shanties of a kind, and have John Masefield as the common literary link; the first and last have texts taken from A Sailor’s Garland which Masefield edited in 1906, while one of his own poems provides the second. Throughout, Berners parodies the accepted convention of the medium and style mercilessly and with some startling effects.
