Programme Note
One of Berners' last pieces, Come on Algernon was written for the 1944 film ‘Champagne Charlie’, to which Berners contributed this song and a polka. The words, unusually written after the music, were by the screenwriter T.E B. Clarke. On the original soundtrack the song was arranged by the film’s director Ernest Irving and sung by Betty Warren in a recording later released on a 78 by Columbia. This arrangement, by Philip Lane, was first published by Chester Music in 2007.
