Peter Maxwell Davies' Sea Elegy has a wholly different character, a stark setting of four bleak Orcadian elegies by the late George Mackay Brown for SATB soli, chorus and orchestra. This is brooding northern music, at once intense, ritualistic and self-conciously monochrome. The orchestra shudders and shimmers, conjuring up a dark post-Sibelian seascape. The harmonic language calls to mind the cool hieratic Stravinsky of the Symphony of Psalms, and the vocal writing is resolutely homophonic and syllabic as if in imitation of dour chapel hymnody. Sea Elegy is an elusive and grimly compelling work, but one that demands absolute conviction in performance...
