Programme Note

Niels Viggo Bentzon's 16 Etudes for Solo Cello should be considered types of studies in which every single etude has its own special character. The etudes can furthermore be played in the concert hall. The number of etudes, and the order in which they are played, can be left to the judgement of the performer.

These etudes are of a combined technical and artistic nature, enabling the player to use his own imagination concerning the working method to be applied. In some of the etudes I have suggested alternative practice methods, and the empty notation systems are intended for additional variations one might feel inspired to use.

For concert use the composer's specifications concerning tempi and dynamics must be adhered to.
