Programme Note

This Concertino for piano duet and orchestra was commissioned by the 1969 Farnham Festival, and is dedicated to Christopher Latham and the orchestra of Frensham Heights School. It is basically a single movement, with a slow introduction and two slower episodes breaking up the predominantly quick pulse of the music. The various sections are linked by close thematic cross-references, much of the material coming either directly or indirectly from the scale figure played slowly at the beginning. Although no solo cadenza as such is heard, there is a passage for the duet soloists and percussion, the latter improvising in short bursts, which to some extent fulfils that function.
