Programme Note

This work was written for the 60th birthday concert of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, on 1 October 1994, conducted by Yan-Pascal Tortelier.

The title is derived from an Old English word meaning "Firework", especially of the whirling and fizzing variety, and the music is in effect a mini-Concerto for Orchestra, lasting about a minute and a quarter.
