Programme Note

Aubade was written in January 1973, in response to a commission from the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, with funds made available by the Arts Council of Great Britain. It was first performed at Lancaster University in January 1974, and again, with some minor revisions, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. It has been broadcast twice.

The work opens vigorously, being occasionally interrupted by quieter, more lyrical passages. A length6y slow section follows; tension gradually accumulates, leading to a fast section, which in turn builds up to a powerful climax. The final outburst from the full band is preceded by a short distant murmur, played by the muted cornets.
