Programme Note

Canzone was written in 1977-78 by a very young and relatively unknown Hans Abrahamsen, who later went on to make a brilliant international career as one of Denmark's leading and most original composers.

With Canzone Hans Abrahamsen did not want to write just another impressive virtuosic piece. He preferred to paint a delicate almost romantic picture of his native city, Copenhagen, on a Sunday morning with no traffic. Just church bells ringing, children playing and families promenading in the parks ...

The piece is written in a musical style very much influenced by his teacher at the time, Per Nørgård.

Mogen Ellegard, Copenhagen, December 1994

Canzone is part of a "Nordic Trilogy" consisting also of Sonata Quasi Una Fantasia
by Antonio Bibalo (Norway) (WH 29923) and In Patches by Pehr Henrik Nordgren (Finland).
The three pieces were commissioned and premiered by Matti Rantanen of Finland (Canzone), Mogens Ellegaard of Denmark (Sonata Quasi Una Fantasia) and Jon Faukstad of Norway (In Patches) on a concert tour in their three native countries in 1978.
