Summary

Born in 1947, Jean-Louis Florentz simultaneously carried out both musical and university studies (natural sciences, literary Arabic, ethnomusicology). Multiple field trips took him to the French West Indies, Polynesia and Africa, notably Kenya, where he undertook periodic studies of animal acoustics. In his music Florentz draws inspiration as much from the French symphonic tradition stemming from Debussy as from an African-style approach to music. The resulting richness of harmonic colouration is matched by a heightened sense of incantatory melody. Jean-Louis Florentz was in residence at the Academy of France in Rome and at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid. A winner of the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris, of the Grand Prix for Symphonic Music from the SACEM, he was elected member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts (Institut de France) in 1995. He died in 2004.
