After starting to learn piano at eight, Nico Muhly joined a school choir and his passion for music was cemented. While studying English (BA) and music composition (MA) at Columbia University, Muhly began working for Philip Glass as editor, keyboardist, and conductor, assisting him on both his concert and film works. Muhly’s orchestral compositions are performed globally and he works with artists including Antony Hegarty (of Antony & the Johnsons), Björk, and Sigur Ros. The Metropolitan Opera and English National Opera recently co-commissioned him to write an opera
: the subject being a gruesome true-life tale of unrequited love and vengeful death – typical of this young talent who finds his inspiration in the most disparate places and who inspires his audience far beyond their spheres.
