Xavier Montsalvatge

Born: 1912

Died: 2002

Nationality: Spanish

Publisher: UME

Xavier Montsalvatge was born in Gerona in 1912 and studied with Enric Morera and Jaume Pahissa in Barcelona, where he died in 2002. Although he wrote some works before the Spanish Civil War the majority of his output was dated after 1940. From the guidance of his teachers he knew well the modernist techniques of the first half of the twentieth century, and applied them in a personal way to his compositions.

He was a musician of wide interests and cultivated many genres of composition, leading to collaborations with great Spanish voices such as Victoria de los Angeles, Montserrat Caballé and Teresa Berganza. He received all of the official composition prizes in his country and the scope of his achievements has made him one of the most important Spanish composers of the twentieth century.
