Per Nørgård awarded the Sibelius Prize
On 9th October 2006 Per Nørgård was awarded the Finnish Wihuri Foundation’s Sibelius Prize of 100,000 Euros. The presentation was made at the Finlandia House in Helsinki with a performance of Per Nørgård’s Singe die Gärten mein Hertz conducted by the composer himself. This is the fourteenth time the foundation awards the prize to an internationally recognized composer. The Sibelius Prize was awarded for the first time in 1953 to Jean Sibelius, and other previous prizewinners include Dmitry Shostakovich, Igor Stravinsky and Benjamin Britten. Per Nørgård has earlier received among other awards the Nordic Council’s Music Prize and the Sonning Prize
