The respected and distinguished English composer Hugh Wood will celebrate his 75th birthday in 2007.

A leading composer of his generation, Wood is best known for his enticing chamber music – notably six string quartets, the Horn Trio, Clarinet Trio and Piano Trio – and powerful orchestral music: concerti for violin, cello and piano, the Symphony Op. 21, and Serenade and Elegy scored for string quartet and string orchestra.

Celebrations confirmed for 2007 include the second performance of the Piano Concerto, to be given by Joanna MacGregor and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra on March 20; a new string orchestra work commissioned jointly by the Hampstead and Highgate and Presteigne Festivals; and a new Clarinet Quintet to be premiered in Liverpool.
