Judith Weir’s extraordinary opera Blond Eckbert returns in a newly composed version this summer.

Commissioned and to be performed by The Opera Group, this new version pares down the instrumental accompaniment from orchestra to chamber ensemble, with many sections recomposed to create a new, more concise form.

In the opera, with a storytelling style inspired by the films of Alfred Hitchcock, a magical singing bird tells an enchanting fairy tale which hides an extraordinary and disturbing secret. A child, raised in an isolated mountain forest by a strange old woman, tries to run away but cannot escape.

Weir has been described as ‘an opera composer of bewildering accomplishment’ (Opera Magazine) and ‘a creature of the theatre and it shows in every bar’ (Financial Times). The Opera Group tours Blond Eckbert and other stories (including Weir’s Really?) around the UK this June and July.
