Leading saxophonist Nobuya Sugawa (pictured) has commissioned a new concerto from Edward Gregson.

The world premiere of the Saxophone Concerto will be given by Sugawa and the BBC Philharmonic under Clark Rundell as part of 'Sonic Skylines' - a festival celebrating composers based in Manchester - on May 10, at the BBC studios in Manchester.

The Japanese premiere of the work is already scheduled for September 10, where Sugawa will be joined by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.

One of Japan's most distinguished saxophonists, Nobuya Sugawa studied at Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music. He now makes over 100 recital and concert appearances a year and has 20 commercial recordings to his name.
