As a conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen is noted, among many other things, for his championing of the best contemporary Finnish composers, including Magnus Lindberg and Kaija Saariaho. Now Salonen has recorded a CD of four works by that other noted Finn, himself. The CD is available from Sony (SK89158), and includes LA Variations, Gambit and Giro performed by his orchestra the Los Angeles Philharmonic of which he is the Music Director; Mania, for cello and ensemble with Anssi Karttunen and the London Sinfonietta, and Five Images after Sappho with Dawn Upshaw and the London Sinfonietta.
