The Symphony No. 1 of John Corigliano — his searing, personal dedication to loved ones lost and impacted by the AIDS epidemic — returns to New York City, Corigliano’s home, on Thursday, May 30, and Saturday, June 1, 2019, as a featured work during the culminating week of the New York Philharmonic’s Music of Conscience season.
Following the June 1 performance, Corigliano curates a New York Philharmonic Nightcap concert in the intimate Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse. Hosted by Nadia Sirota, the program includes performances of music by composers whose voices were cut short by AIDS.
Commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and earning Corigliano a Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition, Symphony No. 1 (1988) has been presented in multiple performances throughout the 2018-19 season and across the world in honor of the composer’s 80th birthday.

This summer, in further celebration of Corigliano’s birthday season, the Glimmerglass Festival and the Chautauqua Opera Company will present two new productions of The Ghosts of Versailles, his acclaimed first opera. The Ghosts of Versailles (1991) was The Metropolitan Opera's first commission in almost 25 years when it first premiered to sold-out audiences. This monumental work continues to reign as one of the most significant operas of the past 50 years.
