Nico Muhly: To Stand in this House

Last year Nico Muhly was commissioned to write a new work for The King’s Singers in celebration of their 50th anniversary, To Stand in this House. This Saturday (January 13), it will receive its UK premiere at a special gala concert 'The King's Singers GOLD' in St John’s Smith Square, London, featuring in a programme of works by Francis Poulenc, Richard Rodney Bennett and Bob Chilcott.

To Stand in this House is a setting of four texts: 'Amicabilis Concordia' (1440) by Henry VI; a seventeenth century prayer of Bishop Thomas Ken, 'The Door of this House'; an extract from ‘Joseph Anton: A Memoir’ by Salman Rushdie; and words from Zadie Smith’s speech upon receiving the Welt Literature Prize in 2016.

Prior to the concert, there are two opportunities to find out more about the work and legacy of The King’s Singers. At 12:00pm, Jeremy Jackman will lead a Choral Workshop alongside other former and current King’s Singers for you to come and sing (or observe) some King’s Singers favourites. The proceeds from this event will be donated to The King's Singers Foundation. Full details at kingssingers.com/sjss. Then, at 6:30pm, there will be a pre-concert talk with King’s Singers past and present, reflecting on the group’s music, sound, history and future. This is free of charge to ticket holders.

On January 16 the alternative, larger version for 2 countertenors, tenor, 2 baritones, bass and SATB choir will receive its own UK premiere at King’s College, Cambridge. The King’s Singers will be joined by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge.
