Henri Dutilleux: Total Immersion

Henri Dutilleux: Total Immersion
2016 marks the centenary of Henri Dutilleux, one of France’s most celebrated and innovative composers.

On Sunday April 30 the BBC Symphony Orchestra will present Henri Dutilleux: Total Immersion as part of their ongoing series at the Barbican in London. The BBC Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Pascal Rophé in the evening concert and performances of chamber music will be given by musicians from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The day also includes a talk from Dr Caroline Potter from Kingston University, about the man and his music, and a showing of the Jean Grémillon film L’amour d’une femme (The Love of a Woman), with music by Elsa Barraine and Dutilleux.

Over the course of the year leading French orchestras including Philharmonie de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre National du Capitol de Toulouse and Orchestre de Paris will showcase some of Dutilleux’s most revered works, including Symphony No 2 'The Double', Métaboles, Tout un monde lointain, Ainsi la Nuit, Mystére de L’Instant and “Muss es sein?”.

About Henri Dutilleux
Dutilleux was primarily active as a composer from the 1950s onwards. His music fuses elements of earlier musical traditions with post-War genres, without emphasising one particular tradition above the rest. He valued his professional and artistic independence from institutions and artistic movements, despite being aware of how important they were to his career at the time.

Over the course of his career Dutilleux received many honours including Grand Prix de Rome, UNESCO’s International Rostrum of Composers, the Grand-Croix de la Légion d’honneur and the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize. He was an associate member of the Royal Academy of Belgium, an honorary member of the London Royal Academy, the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the Academia Nazionale Santa Cecilia in Rome and a member of the Bayerische Akademie der Künste in Munich Schünen. __________________________________________________________________
