News - Irish festival presents music by Bryce Dessner and Richard Reed Parry

Friday, September 4, 2015
The Irish premiere of Wave Movements by Richard Reed Parry and Bryce Dessner will be among the highlights of Sounds from a Safe Harbour, a four-day festival of music, art and conversation in Cork later this month. Dessner is Curator of the festival, which is produced by Cork Opera House and takes place in venues around the city.

On Friday 18 September Richard Reed Parry will discuss his piece Music for Heart and Breath before performing it with Nadia Sirota at a lunchtime event at University College Cork exploring the links between music and science.

On Saturday 19 September the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andre de Ridder will give the Irish premieres of Dessner’s St Carolyn by the Sea (joined by Bryce and Aaron Dessner on guitars) and Wave Movements by Richard Reed Parry and Bryce Dessner. Wave Movements, which has been co-commissioned by Cork Opera House for the festival is a 45-minute work for strings, percussion and singer (Maddy Prior) with film created by photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto from his iconic Seascapes series.

Cellist Kate Ellis will premiere a new solo work co-commissioned by Cork Opera House at Live at St Luke’s on Sunday 20 September. Later that day, Bryce Dessner, Richard Reed Parry, Sō Percussion, Crash Ensemble and others join forces for a Festival Showcase to include performances of Reed Parry’s Interruptions I – VII (Heart and Breath Nonet) and Dessner’s Music for Wood and Strings and Murder Ballades.

Over the course of the festival members of the public visiting the city’s Fitzgerald Park will be able to experience Dessner’s Music for Wood and Strings in an unexpected setting. The outdoor installation uses an iPhone app developed by LEAV. As visitors stroll around the park, the sonic landscape develops according to their chosen route. This is the first time that the installation has been presented in Europe.
