Muhly’s ‘Two Boys’ wins ECHO Klassik 2015 award for best opera recording

The 2013 Metropolitan Opera production was led by conductor David Robertson, directed by Bartlett Sher and recorded live from the Lincoln Centre; the opera’s US premiere and second production. Craig Lucas’ libretto is loosely inspired by a true case of a fatal stabbing that happened in the North of England a few years ago, Two Boys enters the secret world of the teenage bedroom and explores the realities and risks of living our lives online. Muhly’s debut opera was received well by audiences and critics alike in Britain and America; they were particularly impressed with the score’s inventive and sophisticated orchestration. Paul Driver, writing in the Sunday Times, concluded that ‘Two Boys is a timely, touching screen grab of a modern tragedy’ and described its ‘tremendous’ ending as a ‘stroke of inspiration.’
The ECHO Klassik awards will be broadcast live on ZDF from the Konzerthaus Berlin on October 18.
