The Meidän Festivaali, ‘Our Festival’, in Finland commences today and features a programme containing a wide selection of works by Bryce Dessner. In addition, the Chester Music composer will personally perform a number of his own works. On Friday Dessner will join the Kamus Quartet in a performance of his chamber work Quintets for string quartet and Guitar; the following day he will perform his Garcia Counterpoint for solo guitar in the Festival’s penultimate concert. Other works to be performed include Tenebre, Little Something Blue and Ornament and Crime, the last of which will be performed on July 30 by the Finnish Violinist and advocate of new music, Pekka Kuusisto.

The festival, founded by Kuusisto, is held in the picturesque setting of Lake Tuulsa, a landscape which inspired Sibelius and his contemporaries. The festival takes full advantage of its surroundings in the programming of its performances. Dessner’s music will accompany a ‘walking concert’ format where the audience will move from house to house each displaying artwork from a number of female artists – nature, art and music are presented as an artistic whole to create a unique artistic experience.

“Our Festival is gentle. It lives in these beautiful little places, in living rooms, on lakes, in forests, and wants to whisper some exciting things into your ears. We’ll be sharing a secret. Our Festival wants to invent new flexible forms for concerts, where the message is more important than dress codes or good behaviour.”
Pekka Kuusisto

Whilst dedicating a great deal of time to new music, the festival also looks back to the music inspired by the event’s natural setting, this year focusing particularly on Sibelius’ chamber works. This relatively new festival has proved to be exceptionally popular. A number of this year’s concerts have sold out and over the past few years Kuusisto’s festival has attained several awards for its excellence, namely Festival of the Year in 2011 by Finland Festivals and the State of Finland Music Prize in 2013.
