On July 22, the latest work by Hugh Wood, An Epithalamion, or Mariage Song will be premiered by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus under the baton of Sir Andrew Davis. This new cantata is Wood’s first work for chorus and orchestra and one of his largest works to date. The text by John Donne depicts the marriage of Lady Elizabeth and Count Palatine on St Valentines Day in 1613. Throughout the poem, Donne likens the betrothed lovers to pairs of birds, something which Wood has aimed to evoke in his setting.

This concert will also feature Frederick Delius’ Summer Garden, Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe – Suite No 2 and Carl Nielsen’s Clarinet Concerto with soloist and former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, Mark Simpson.

Before the concert, Wood will be featured in a composer portrait, which will focus upon some of his chamber works as part of a conversation with Andrew McGregor.

The composer portrait will take place from 5.15-6pm in the Royal College of Music and will be followed by the premiere at 7pm in the Royal Albert Hall. Both events will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and the latter will be broadcast on BBC FOUR on July 30. More information about the performance, broadcasts and where to purchase tickets can be found here.
