Thomas Hampson, baritone, and Martin Grubinger Junior will be touring a new arrangement of John Corigliano’s One Sweet Morning starting with the world premiere at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival at Laeiszhalle Hamburg on July 20, 2015.

One Sweet Morning
was originally written for mezzo-soprano and orchestra, and is a piece for commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Words are essential in this work. While thinking about the concept of his composition on 9/11, John Corigliano was wondering how one can “hear music of any dramatic surges without imagining these events accompanying the music—or vice versa?” He wrote: “Inevitably, the piece would become a tone poem of that unimaginable day – something I never intended and did not want. Yet how could I instruct the audience to ignore their own memories?” So Corigliano decided to write a piece with words to get other images “both to refute and complement the all-too-vivid ones we’d bring with us into the concert hall.”

The original version is still awaiting its European Premiere.
