The premiere of Søren Nils Eichberg Symphony No 3 will mark the end of the composer’s time as Composer in Residence for The Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Three Symphonies and other orchestral works have been premiered during this period several of which are already on CD.
Symphony No 3 will be premiered by The Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Danish Radio Concert Choir conducted by Robert Spano on April 10 at Koncerthuset in Copenhagen.
A Symphony full of questions
Søren Nils Eichberg describes his newest symphony as his most personal work yet and a symphony full of questions but no answers. The inspiration for the symphony came from many directions but all had to do with quests, searching, renewal and questioning:
- Sounds recorded by NASA’s Voyager on its way through Space
- Algorithms that repeat and renew themselves
- Excerpts from Qu Yuan’s Chinese poem ”The Heavenly Questions” with 170 questions and not a single answer.
- A poem about the loss of childhood by David Vogel who died in Auschwitz in 1944 and a well-known and much loved Danish lullaby with music by Carl Nielsen.
Not all of these inspirations can be heard directly in the sung text or in the music, but all form the background for this deeply personal piece of music that Søren Nils Eichberg has written at a time in his life which he himself describes as a time of change with a feeling of standing on the brink of unknown territories.
