Salonen premiere of Karawane to launch Creative Chair position at Tonhalle Zurich
Hugo Ball at Cabaret Voltaire, Zürich presenting Karawane in June 1916
Karawane is a new choral symphonic work written by Esa-Pekka Salonen for Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, based on the text Karawane by Hugo Ball (1886 1927), a German author, poet and one of the leading Dada artists. As co-founder of the Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich, Ball led the Dada movement in Zürich, and is one of the people credited with naming the movement "Dada", by allegedly choosing the word at random from a dictionary. However, his involvement with the Dada movement only lasted about two years. Karawane is a nonsense sound poem whose unique language triggers associations with a great variety of existing languages without rooting clearly in one specific language. It is a poetic style inspired by the Italian futurism.

On September 10 2014 the season opening and inaugural concert of the new principal conductor Lionel Bringuier will present Karawane with the Zürcher-Singakademie. The choir will perform it again with the co-commissioner Bamberger Symphoniker on October 18 and 19 2014 in Bamberg and Erlangen with Lionel Bringuier conducting. The piece is co-commissioned by Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert, Music Director with the generous support of Marie-Josée Kravis.

In Zürich, the Creative Chair scheme will encompass a great variety of performances of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s works which will enable Zürich audiences to experience his oeuvre in an unique setting including many orchestral works and chamber music but also the chance to experience him giving a masterclass and conducting his own works:

October 25, 26 2014 – Piano Concerto
