Nyman - Symphony No 11: Hillsborough Memorial premiere
Michael Nyman’s new work Symphony No 11: Hillsborough Memorial has been commissioned by Liverpool Biennial and is to be premiered on July 5 at Liverpool Cathedral. 25 years after the Hillsborough tragedy, this new work has been commissioned with the support of the Liverpool City council as one of the major new works for the Liverpool International Festival for Business and will feature in the opening weekend of Biennial 2014. Nyman hopes that this hour-long symphonic work will “make a small but significant contribution to the healing process still necessary for the families of the lost fans”.

The work will be performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra with mezzo soprano Kathryn Rudge, the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth and Training Choirs and is to be conducted by Josep Vicent. Kathryn Rudge will sing the names of the 96 Liverpool fans who lost their lives, accompanied by music Nyman was recording on the afternoon of the Hillsborough tragedy.

Tickets can be purchased from May 9 at the Biennial website.

The new work will also be recorded by the RLPO in May in Liverpool for release on Michael Nyman Records.
