Manchester Celebrates McCabe with a Weekend of Music
Over the weekend of 15th and 16th February, the Royal Northern College of Music brings together three major musical institutions in Manchester to celebrate the 75th birthday year of John McCabe.

Throughout the weekend, Landscapes of the Mind: The Music of John McCabe, all of the composer’s piano music will be performed in a Piano Marathon, with performances by tutors and students from Chethams School of Music, Manchester University, and the RNCM. In addition there will be chamber music concerts featuring Rounds for Brass Quintet, Oboe Quartet, Pueblo for solo double bass and the evocative Silver Nocturnes for baritone and string quartet.

The weekend culminates in a concert by Linda Merrick and the Kreutzer Quartet, featuring La Donna, a work which they commissioned. Also in the programme is The Woman by the Sea for piano quintet. On the previous evening there will be a screening of the Japanese film which inspired the work, Sansho Dayu, directed by the renowned Kenji Mizoguchi .

All concerts will be introduced by Prof. George Odam, author of the book on John McCabe, Landscapes of the Mind, with the composer in attendance.
