Henze’s An den Wind on CD
An den Wind by Hans Werner Henze, for choir and large ensemble, was commissioned by the Thomaner Choir for their 800th anniversary celebration in 2012. All of the works which they commissioned during 2012 have now been released on a double CD, including recordings of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Friedrich Biller (Thomaskantor), Krzystof Penderecki, Heinz Holliger, Brett Dean and Hans Werner Henze. The booklet includes articles about the series and individual works.

An den Wind was premiered at Pentecost 2012 at Thomaskirche with the Thomaner Choir and musicians from the Gewandhausorchester, the orchestra which premiered Elogium Musicum in 2008 with the MDR Radio Choir.

The series of poems for An den Wind were written by Christian Lehnert, librettist of Phaedra, and retell the Pentecost story as a highly spiritual journey, without being primarily religious. They pay tribute to Henze - a dedicated atheist who had nevertheless proven many times to having been an extremely open-minded, curious and spiritual person.

An den Wind is the last work that Henze composed before his death in November 2012.
