The John Armitage Memorial Trust commissioned Paul Mealor for a work to be performed several times in 2013. The Farthest Shore was premiered in May at St David’s Cathedral in Wales by the BBC Singers, St David’s Cathedral Choir, BBC National Orchestra of Wales Brass and soloists with Nicholas Cleobury. It will be performed again as part of the City of London Festival on July 2, with subsequent airings in Hythe, Kent on July 6 and in Edinburgh on November 9 with the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union and Michael Bawtree. New recordings include Mealor’s recent work Praise, performed by Rodolfus Choir on Signum and Faith’s Call, recorded by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on Deutsche Grammophon. Decca will release a new disc of choral works featuring Tenebrae with Nigel Short, the Aurora Orchestra and Tyler Rix later in 2013.
