Since Gustavo Dudamel won the first Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in 2004, the competition has featured prominently on the musical landscape and the competition has been followed closely by the media and the music business. In 2013, for the 4th Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition 12 participants were chosen through an intensive selection process from over 400 applicants from 60 different countries. As part of the competition repertoire, each of the candidates will conduct the orchestral work Act by Rolf Wallin.

For each competition a unique jury is assembled and in 2013 this will include Jonathan Nott, Markus Stenz, John Carewe, Louwrens Langevoort, Jonathan Mills, Albert Schmitt, Wolfgang Fink, Christian Dibbern and last but not least Rolf Wallin.
