News - Julia Wolfe in the Laboratory

Monday, January 28, 2013
The Aire de Jeu festival at Les Subsistances in Lyon, France — the International Laboratory for artistic creation dedicated to theatre, dance, and contemporary circus — features Julia Wolfe's music choreographed by Israel's Arkadi Zaides (Dig Deep), France's Maud Le Pladec (Dark Full Ride), Portugal's Tánia Carvalho (LAD), and the Democratic Republic of Congo's Faustin Linyekula (Stronghold) between January 29 and February 2.

Her music will be performed by Tactus, Violaine Launay, Le Quatuor Leonis, and Jean Blanchard.

Drawing inspiration from folk, classical, and rock genres, Wolfe's music brings a modern sensibility to each while simultaneously tearing down the walls between them.

A co-founder of the inimitable New York City new-music collective, Bang on a Can, Wolfe's music is distinguished by an intense physicality and a relentless power that pushes performers to extremes and demands attention from the audience. In the words of the Wall Street Journal, Wolfe has "long inhabited a terrain of [her] own, a place where classical forms are recharged by the repetitive patterns of minimalism and the driving energy of rock."

Her music has been used by choreographers from independent companies to large national ballets.
