Susan Graham sings Lady Macbeth
Susan Graham, who has been called America’s favourite mezzo, is featuring Lady Macbeth by Joseph Horovitz in her programme for a twelve-city recital tour of North America and Europe. Accompanied by pianist Malcolm Martineau, the tour starts in Quebec this month, continuing via Carnegie Hall, New York, and the Kennedy Center, Washington, to Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, with the final recital in London’s Wigmore Hall in June.

Horovitz’s work is a dramatic scena based on Shakespeare’s Macbeth, with the text selected by the composer to illustrate the character of Lady Macbeth and her descent into madness. Commissioned by the Bergen Festival in 1970, it has since been performed by eminent mezzos, including Sarah Walker, who has recorded it with Graham Johnson (Hyperion CDA66136), Della Jones, Felicity Palmer, Catherine Wyn-Rogers and Susan Bickley.
