The Malcolm Arnold Festival 2010

The Malcolm Arnold Festival 2010

‘Stage and Screen’ is the theme for the fifth annual Malcolm Arnold Festival which takes place at the Royal & Derngate theatres in the composer’s home town of Northampton on October 16 and 17.

The festival will focus on the music Arnold wrote during the 1950s and 60s for over seventy major feature films made in both Britain and Hollywood. It is a medium for which Arnold created some of his most enduring works, many of which will be heard over the weekend.

These include the scores to The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, The Sound Barrier, St Trinian’s, Hobson’s Choice, The Stolen Face, Trapeze, David Copperfield and The Bridge on the River Kwai.

The Festival will be opened by actress Hayley Mills, star of the 1961 film Whistle down the Wind, who will share her reminiscences of the composer. Conductors Matthew Taylor and John Gibbons and pianist Moritz Ernst (all of whom will perform over the weekend) will judge the Malcolm Arnold Performance Competition, and pianist and broadcaster Neil Brand will explore Arnold’s music for comedy films.
