Naxos Quartets, ‘a 21st-century landmark’
Chester Music is pleased to announce that all of the Naxos Quartets by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies are now available, and that the final study scores have been published so that the full set of ten are now available, in addition to the parts.
The Naxos Records commissions were composed over a period of five years, commencing in 2002 and the final quartet (No 10) received its world premiere in October 2007.

The quartets are a varied and rich set, a musical journey into the thoughts of the composer at the peak of his reputation and creative powers. Critics have been unanimous in their praise:

‘The Naxos cycle is a 21st-century landmark.’ (The Times)

‘Little did we know, when Max was commissioned by budget label Naxos to write 10 string quartets, what a late flowering odyssey it would be, all his mature skills coalescing within the intense discipline of Haydn-esque form.’ (Financial Times)

Naxos Records has also released this month a box set of the entire recordings by the Maggini Quartet 8.505225.
