Horovitz - String Quartet No 5

Horovitz - String Quartet No 5
This August, Joseph Horovitz’s String Quartet No 5 will be performed by the Aron Quartet in the Chamber Music Festival at Schloss Laudon, a baroque castle just outside Vienna.

Premiered forty years ago by the Amadeus Quartet at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the work was commissioned as a tribute to the eminent art historian Sir Ernst Gombrich. It reflects the fact that the dedicatee, three of the performers and the composer had all found a safe home in England after the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938. The single-movement work has been performed and broadcast internationally, and recorded by the Carducci String Quartet (CD Carducci Classics CSQ 6482).

In lighter vein, Horovitz’s cantata Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo , with words by Michael Flanders, has been broadcast on Vienna’s classical music radio station in the version recorded by the King’s Singers. This popular choral work, which has been translated into six languages and produced in Braille, also celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year.
