Turbulent Landscapes

Turbulent Landscapes
Paintings by Turner, songs by Robert Burns and a concerto for the most unlikely of musical combinations provide the inspiration for a new disc of music by Thea Musgrave released by NMC. Performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, it features three of Musgrave’s most important recent orchestral works.

Originally commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Turbulent Landscapes presents a series of musical portraits inspired by Turner’s paintings. Songs for a Winter’s Evening, a suite of songs to poetry by Burns, is sung by soprano Lisa Milne. The most recent piece, the concerto Two’s Company, was written for oboist Nicholas Daniel and percussionist Evelyn Glennie and first performed at the BBC Proms in 2007.

"Musgrave's musical style, tonal but never obvious, remains intriguingly and appealingly her own." The Guardian
