Bainbridge’s music has been performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Residentie Orkest Den Haag and Toronto Symphony Orchestra; by ensembles including the London Sinfonietta, Nash Ensemble and Kreuzer Quartet; and at the Aldeburgh, Cheltenham, Spitalfields and Huddersfield Festivals.

In 1997 he won the Grawemeyer Award for Ad Ora Incerta (1993), an orchestral song cycle for mezzo soprano and bassoon on poems by Primo Levi, later recorded by NMC Records. In 2005 Scherzi was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Last Night of the Proms.

Recent works include Voiles for bassoon and strings, Diptych for orchestra and Music Space Reflection, a work for 28 players inspired by and designed to be performed inside buildings designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, including the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester, Jewish Museum in Copenhagen and the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. His Piano Trio was premiered in Boston in 2008 and performed in New York’s Merkin Concert Hall in March 2009.
