Henze's latest opera L’Upupa und der Triumph der Sohnesliebe was a highlight of this year’s Salzburg Festival.

“Above it all floats the wisdom of old age which has not yet come to rest. Thus a late work has come into being that casually plays with the late works of famous colleagues; that fits in with "Tristan" and the "Magic Flute"; that would cunningly like to renounce all excitement and all earthly activity/hustle and bustle. That now as ever formulates Henze's belief about the beautiful, as one of the unworldly categories, that the world cannot do without.” writes Reinhard Brembeck in Süddeutsche Zeitung after the world premiere, which was regarded by many as the outstanding production of this summer’s festival.

The same production will be staged at the Teatro Real, Madrid in December 2004 and can also be seen at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo and Deutsche Oper Berlin in upcoming seasons.
